Lecture 6: Film Narratives

Cinema is an invention without future – Louis Lumiere

Novelty with no eexprctation of durability – Thomas Edison

คนสมัยก่อนไม่คิดว่า "หนัง" จะเป็นอะไรที่อยู่ได้นาน นึกว่ามาแล้วก็จะไป เป็นแค่เทรนด์

-Cinema of attraction – Tom Gunning

showcase wizardry of technology

-emphasis on showing scene, technology rather than context

-At it's origin:

Largely unconstructed & diffuse

Aesthetically kaleidoscopic, even random

Syntagm of sign without paradigm or code

To become a signifying practice:

had to be strutured

had to develop a conventionalized system of rules/codes

had to create cinematic language & grammar, a formal style

developed a range of competing 'dialects'

Classical Hollywood Cinema.

Became global dominant system

mainstream dominant cinema

institutional mode of representation

classic realist cinema

popular narrative cinema

principal: clarity, simplicity, order, economy, coherance, symmetry, unity

cinema that pitches for reality effect

simulate or reproduce commonly held notion of real

-mimetic --> produce impression of reality

-audience identification with fictional world

-suspense of disbelief

we acknowledge that it is man-made, but tend to forget that

-story-based media

narrative structure --> narration

story contruction --> story telling

Principal of narratives stucture:

-unified & linear

:chain of events in cause-effect relationship occuring in time&space

A cause B cause C

:A-B-A (order – disorder-reorder) conflict rise & put down

-character centered

:individual, consistent, rounded, psychologized

-goal driven & achieve absolute “closure”

Principal of Narration:

-cinematic narration IS CINEMATIC

full range of its multiply codes to narrate/ignify

ex. Cinematography, dialogue, perf, music, sound

Film style: the narrator

“element of style serve to shape narrative”

cinematic narration: transparent & clear, excessively obvious cinema

(omniscient) all-knowing

Economic Presentation

rule in mainstream cinmea

all elements of film must function to produce & prepel narrative meaning

invisible story-teller

conceal its enunciative mechanism (spoken out)

opposition to classical realist form

(avant-garde, art cinema, political, cinema vertile, even porn)

refuse to tells tory, disorder sequence, aperture

breal spell of mimesis, direct address, show construction of text

collective as hero, history as protagonist

collapse of studio system, rise of indy

industrial reorganization of Hollywood into multimedia MNC challence the primary of classical realism as dominant mode

film = part of multimedia commodity complex (block buster, merchandising, spin off)

fragmentation of mass audience

niche markets (youth, cult, subcult., arthouse)

impacs of new technology

digital effect, spectacle vs narrative, film=theme ride

post-modern style

formal pluralism, multiply narratives, narrational ambiguity, stylistic exhibitionism

cinema developed various signifying systerm

most dominant = hollywood classical

largely defined by classical realist narratives

govern by range of codes & convention at level of both narrative structive & narration

competing system of film signification
